Caterpillar Marine Power Display vs Mini MPD: What’s the Difference?

If you are replacing a Caterpillar marine engine display, you may come across two similar names: Marine Power Display (MPD) and Mini Marine Power Display (Mini MPD or MMPD).

They sound almost the same, so what is actually different?

The simple answer is size. The Mini MPD provides the same core display functionality in a much smaller package. Caterpillar describes the Mini MPD as 55% smaller overall than the MPD.

That doesn't mean you should automatically replace one with the other, though. If you already have a display fitted to the vessel, start with the part number on the existing unit.

The Marine Power Display (MPD) is used to display engine information on compatible Caterpillar marine installations.

What Is the Caterpillar Mini MPD?

The Mini Marine Power Display (MMPD) does much the same job, but in a more compact package.

A key reference is:

292-9713 / 2929713 — Mini Marine Power Display (MMPD) Electronic Control Module

The Mini MPD has a 320 × 240 display, 9–32 V power supply and 12-pin connector.

Its overall dimensions are approximately 147 × 102 × 52.36 mm, making it considerably smaller than the standard MPD.

That smaller size can be useful where dashboard or helm space is limited.

Can You Replace an MPD With a Mini MPD?

Don't assume that 307-7541 and 292-9713 are direct interchangeable replacements simply because the Mini MPD provides the same core functionality.

The physical installation is different, and the correct display can depend on the engine configuration, existing monitoring system and vessel installation.

If you're replacing an old display, have a look at the label on the back first.

If it shows 307-7541, start with the MPD.

If it shows 292-9713, start with the Mini MPD.

Which Caterpillar Engines Use These Displays?

There is considerable overlap in their marine applications.

Depending on the display and engine configuration, applications include Caterpillar C7, C9, C12, C15, C18, C32, 3412, 3412E, 3508, 3512 and 3516 marine engines.

However, seeing your engine model in an application list does not automatically confirm that a display will fit your particular installation.

For example, knowing that you have a C18 is useful, but the existing display number and engine serial number give us much more information.
