Detroit Diesel traces its origins to 1938, when General Motors formed its GM Diesel Division in Detroit, Michigan.
Detroit Diesel Corporation was subsequently formed in 1988.
Detroit Diesel engines developed a substantial installed base in commercial, industrial and marine applications. Many earlier Detroit Diesel two-stroke engines remain in operation today in vessels, workboats, yachts, generators and auxiliary installations.
The earlier Series 53, 71, 92 and 149 families are two-stroke diesel engines, while the later Series 60 is a four-stroke electronically controlled engine family.
Different configurations within the same family can use different aspiration, rotation, cooling, fuel-system and control arrangements. Accurate engine identification is therefore important when ordering replacement parts.
